Private Security Scope in Africa
The use of private security services is growing as the population does in Africa.
“The population of Africa is projected to grow from 1.1. billion to 2.4 billion in the next 35 years.”
The growth of the private security industry in Africa is set to expand for the following reasons:
1) “The current levels of understaffed, and poorly paid law enforcement in Africa”
2) The lack of proper training to address terror-related activities and violent crime in Africa is on the rise.
In South Africa alone the private security industry outnumbers the nation’s law enforcement officers in large numbers. While this may present a problem for the governments of Africa as they grapple with how to deal with terror groups like Boko Haram or increases in illicit civil crime issues, it offers a large and growing opportunity for the private security industry as a whole. There is new research that shows that
“ effective institutions may lessen violently responses”,
which would assist Africa in meeting social needs without a costly governmental 4 response.
Given the ability, for African security companies to meet the gap professionally, with advanced training internally, and a loosening of the current restrictions on private security companies using firearms in Africa would allow for social trust to be built. It has been shown that
“social trust shapes how a citizen thinks about territorial disputes, and influences public opinion favored by the public.”
For private security companies, there is a large opportunity if 5 the bar of professional, non-biased, security management can be a new growth norm for African communities facing these growth factors in non-state actors’ attempts at violence and disruption of civil society. In short for the private security company willing to go above and beyond in training, equipment, technology, and use of force practices the potential for financial growth is huge.
